Where the data comes from

Every orbit here is a two-line element set (TLE) published by CelesTrak, which redistributes the US Space Force tracking catalog. WatchSat ships a snapshot of that catalog — refreshed twice a week, and the source of every figure on this site — and refreshes from CelesTrak through its own edge-cached proxy while you watch. The positions themselves are computed on your device with the SGP4/SDP4 model, so no request tells a server which satellite you are looking at or where you are standing. Accuracy follows the age of the element set: a fresh low-Earth-orbit fit is good to about a kilometre and drifts by a kilometre or more per day, which is why every satellite page shows its epoch. What is up there

16,004 active satellites is not an abstraction — it is a catalog you can browse object by object. Roughly two thirds of it is a single network, SpaceX’s Starlink; the rest spans OneWeb broadband, the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou navigation fleets, crewed space stations, and several thousand other active satellites doing weather, Earth observation, communications and science.
