Who’s in Space Right Now?

WatchSat shows a live count of the people currently in orbit aboard the world’s space stations — the International Space Station and China’s Tiangong — with each crew member named, from live data. The exact number changes with every launch and landing.

Robots exploring in our place

Beyond the crews, dozens of uncrewed spacecraft are at work across the solar system: rovers and orbiters at Mars, orbiters at the Moon, probes flying through the Sun’s corona, missions cruising to asteroids, Juno at Jupiter, and the Voyagers and New Horizons out in interstellar space and the Kuiper Belt. Each links to a live view — the stations to their trackers, the planets, Moon and Sun to the 3D globe, and the interstellar craft to Deep Space.

Where the crew list comes from

The names and the count come from Open Notify’s long-running astros.json feed, fetched through WatchSat’s /api/humans-in-space edge proxy and validated before it is displayed — so the page shows the current roster rather than a number typed in by hand. If the feed is unreachable, the page says so instead of guessing.

The two crewed outposts

Only two stations have people aboard today. The International Space Station flies at roughly 400–420 km on an orbit inclined 51.6° to the equator, which is why it passes over most inhabited latitudes and is the easiest spacecraft to see with the naked eye — check tonight’s passes or track it live. China’s Tiangong flies a similar low-Earth orbit and is also naked-eye visible on a good pass. Both, and every other object in the stations group, are listed under space stations.

Crews rotate and missions come and go: the human count here is live, and the robotic roster is a maintained snapshot.
